“I’m really proud of this football team,” Brown said. “But it’s more than just today. I’ve been really proud of this team ever since workouts started back.”
The Rebels are coming off a disappointing 2018 season in which they finished 4-7, including a 34-28 loss at Catholic in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.
“They have been really motivated,” Brown said. “We are really starting to turn the corner in a lot of aspects of our program. Today just showed that. We came out here and they were like sponges. We learned a lot of new stuff and got better.”
Brown said he plans to use the spring not only to get better at fundamentals, but also to do some experimentation. The Rebels will be looking to replace several key players from last year’s team, including quarterback Jawaun Moore, linebackers DeMarcus Nelson and Ben Skvara and wide receiver Will Eggleston.
“We’ve got several people we are looking at different positions because of need or to give us some depth,” Brown said. “Spring is a time when you try to figure out your depth chart.”
West has two scrimmages planned for this spring, one at Morristown West on May 2 and another at home against Science Hill on May 10. Both scrimmages will start at 6 p.m.
“We are always going to scrimmage good teams,” Brown said. “They will show you what you are not good at very quickly. That’s what spring is for, for us to get better.”
